English passage interpretation help?

Can you help me come up with questions with thsi passage for English AP. I have to come up with really good questions about language, rhetoric, literary devices and stuff like that..

Thank you

Such was the young clergyman's condition, and so

imminent the prospect that his dawning light would be

extinguished, all untimely, when Roger Chillingworth

made his advent to the town. His first entry on the

scene, few people could tell whence, dropping down,

as it were, out of the sky, or starting from the nether

earth, had an aspect of mystery, which was easily

heightened to the miraculous. He was now known to

be a man of skill; it was observed that he gathered

We may not be seeing your entire passage. What I see ends with the word "value." However, I am guessing that you are reading Scarlet Letter. Do you only have this short passage to work with or the entire chapter/ book? I would include at least one question about metaphor ( entrance compared to a miracle) or irony ( although seen as sent by God, he actually becomes a demonic character), or foreshadowing ( assumes the role of a leech or doctor later practices dark or evil medicine). As for language, what about "nether earth." And let's not forget Dimmesdale ( the minister). What is his dawning light? Why is it about to be extinguished? How does Chillingworth's coming affect that? Hope this gets you started. If you have a longer passage, I am sure you can come up with more questions.

The First link includes some sample questions, chapter by chapter. The next two have free essays, discussions about the book. The fourth link has an excellent essay about how Hawthorne developed the Chillingworth character. The last link discusses a variety of literary devices, elements, and techniques . Maybe you can spot an example of something to impress the class. Good Luck!
