Read this death sentence by Judge Roy Bean of the 1800's. Is this harsh, or not harsh enough?

Jose Manuel Miguel Gonzales, in a few short weeks it will be spring. The snows of winter will flow away, the ice will vanish, the air will become soft and balmy. The annual miracle of the years will awaken and come to pass.

But you will not be there.

The rivulet will run its soaring course to the sea. The timid desert flowers will put forth their tender shoots. The glorious valleys in this imperial domain will blossom as the rose.

Still you will not be there.

From every treetop, some wildwood songster will carol his mating song. Butterflies will sport in the sunshine. The gentle breeze will tease the tassels of the wild grasses and all nature will be glad.

But you will not be there to enjoy it.

Because I command the sheriff of the county to lead you away to some remote spot, swing you by the neck from a knotting bough of some sturdy oak and let you hang until dead.

And then Jose Manuel Miguel Gonzales, I further command that such officer retire quickly from you

Depends on the crime, I guess. If it was murder, it's probably about right. If it was shoplifting, it's somewhat harsh.
Reply:He killed someone, he deserved what he got.
Reply:It is beautifully written, in today's standard it is a bit harsh but for the time period it is quite gentle. Sounds like the judge was a writer. Shows that the educated back then were far more educated then we are now; however we have so much more to learn.
Reply:It's written well.
Reply:still livin in the 80's, I mean 1800's?
Reply:Sounds poetic.
Reply:Well first off, "what the hell did Jose' do?" Second, yes it is worded wonderfully I think...And if he killed somebody on purpose, then yes he should be "set free from society" just as he robbed somebody of their life and should be put to death....

Poetic Justice
Reply:sounds right given the time period.

while i don't see this a racist, people don't know that being racist was normal 100 years ago and before that. If I was the judge i would have mentioned the crimes and victims and their suffering.
Reply:WHAT does this have to do with immigration, legal or illegal? This is about murder and capital punishment. It is not related to IMMIGRATION at all.

I am TOTALLY against illegal immigration, but you harm the cause by making it about Hispanics. If it is about race to you, then you need to grow up a bit and when you can think for yourself make your decision about the merits of illegal vs. legal immigration based on the pros vs. the cons. Then you can come back. Until then, why ask this sort of question in the immigration forum?
Reply:Depends on what Jose did....
Reply:Don't know the crime, maybe the punishment fit the crime.
