Is this an effective introduction to my short story?

It is for school =] ..

Dry twigs, sheltered by the overcrowded branches of the sycamore trees overhead snap beneath my shuffling feet, echoing around the small opening like a shout in a tunnel. The sharp, strong smell of rotting leaves and wild flowers hang around in the sweltering heat, causing me to wince and my eyes to water. It was exactly how I had remembered; protective, safe, my own secret haven from the world. Memories flood back to me from my childhood; a scraped knee from climbing a tree, a game of hide and seek among the prickly bushes, the adrenaline rush given from a ride on the rope-swing. That rope swing. All that remains of it is a short frayed piece of discoloured rope which I twist solemnly through my fingers, savouring the memories it brings.

Does it make you want to read on? Find out more?

Don't be afraid to be critical!

Thanks x

I am a published author, and I liked it. I usually can find things to tear apart, but this sounds very good. There are perhaps one or two words, where I might have chosen different ones, but the overall is good enough that they are hardly worth mentioning.

Keep up this level of writing and you will be on the best-seller list for sure.

added note: I would love to tell, but this is not the name under which I write, and I wish to keep this identity separate from the other name. Anyway, who knows? --maybe you have already read some of my work... Just read what interests you and keep up the good work.
