You generally need two different types of apples (not two of the same type) to insure good fruit production. You can also use an ornamental crabapple to cross pollinate apple trees. Here is a good link that links to several articles by the different university extension services.

Reply:I just planted a Golden Delicious and a Gala apple tree, I wanted the Gala apples and it needs cross pollination as well, and based on what I have read, they should flower at about the same time (Golden Del was listed as one of the possible cross pollinators for Gala). I found information by looking at various websites of companies that sell apple trees, and can't remember them all of course, but Gurney's was one, and also at websites from universities that have horticultural research - I think I just did a google search on Gala apple tree, which you could also do for Golden Delicious. I also thought I read that Golden Delicious didn't need a cross pollinator, but I could be mistaken about that.
